Lionfish sighting today at Tainaron

Post by omegendorph » Mon Aug 26, 2019 11:56 pm

This afternoon at Tainaron my daughter called me to see a “strange fish”. Managed to take some pics as very close to surface and shared with a friend who is a specialist. Turns out to be a Lionfish (i.e. a Pterosis, a subspecies of the Scorpionfish). Like the scorpionfish it is amazingly beautiful and extremely poisonous, look it up in wikipedia if you want the full list of nasty effects. It is originally a tropical fish but apparently now invasive in the Mediterranean, reports of lots of them on Cyprus and Rhodes. We saw two in an hour at Tainaron. Has anyone else seen one?
